Between 1997 and 1999, The Institute for PublicRelations has published a series of three documents, who's purpose was to offer orientation and suggestions regarding the best way to evaluate the relationships beteween an organization and it's publics.
Institutional theorists assert that the institutional environment can strongly influence the development of formal structures in an organization, often more profoundly than market pressures. Innovative structures that improve technical efficiency in early-adopting organizations are legitimized in the environment. Human Resource Management and the Institutional Perspective explores the overlapping and distinct elements in work and employment relations both within and across country lines. The authors focus on intra-firm relations, internal diversity within varieties of capitalism, and the uneven and experimental nature of systemic change, all the while employing an impressive level of theoretical rigor and empirical evidence. - institutional logics, a concept pioneered by Friedland & Alford (1991) and later by Thornton, Ocasio & Lounsbury (2012).

The institutional logic perspective mostly take a structural and macro approach to institutional analysis - institutional work, a concept pioneered by Lawrence & Suddaby, (2006). By contrast with the logic perspective, it gives agentic power to social actors, and assumes those actors can influence institutions - either maintaining or disrupting them. The relevance of institutional theory to Human Resource Management (HRM) was initially derived from this view (Rosenzweig & Nohria 1994). The institutional approach used in organisational analysis is referred to as organisational institutionalism (Greenwood et al. 2008). Institutional theory emphasizes the normative impact of the environment on organizational activity. Colleges and universities exist within an institutional environment in which external stakeholders determine in part the expectations for organizational behavior and practices.
